What does a Birth Photographer do?
A Birth photographer captures the arrival of your baby’s birth in a photojournalistic way. It’s telling a story – the beginning of theirs, but also a moment in YOURS. Birth photography is about freezing those raw emotions, and giving you something that will forever remind you of the love and connections you felt on one of the most important days of your life.
Birth photography is for everyone. It doesn’t matter if you’re choosing to birth in a hospital, at home, having a belly birth (C-section), or in the ocean!
t’s not just about getting photos of baby crowning either. Those shots are not for everyone, and that’s okay. Your Birth photographer can document your birth in a tasteful way with so many other images.
The first time you meet your baby, your spouse’s reaction, cutting the umbilical cord, newborn assessment such as weight and measurements, bonding moments shortly after birth, and your first photo as a family. Reflecting on the images captured by your Birth photographer can not only feel empowering, but also healing.
“But aren’t Birth Photographers really expensive?”
If you value a Birth Photographer’s art and desire your birth experience to be documented, you know that Birth photography pricing is an investment. Family photos can also be “expensive” depending on your own financial situation.
It’s also important to take into consideration the dedication that a Birth Photographer puts into each Client. For 3-4 weeks your photographer is on-call for you and does not travel more than an hour away from where you will be delivering, in case they get your call. Some births are quick and can last only 3 hours. Other times a Birth Photographer can spend 12+ hours at a birth! This is on top of time they’ve already spent awake dealing with work or family (and kids!) prior to joining you for your birth. I’ve personally attended many births where by the end I had been up for over 24 hours. It’s a rewarding job, but it’s a tough one.
I personally regret not hiring a Birth photographer for the birth of my children. I had my best friend take photos during my last birth, but it’s not the same as hiring a professional. Although I’ll treasure those images – to see my labour, birth, and postpartum from a different perspective – I’ll forever wish I had those photos from my first 3 births. Memories fade, but photos are a constant reminder to us.
Once you realize that you need a Birth photographer, don’t hesitate to book! Do your research and get in their calendar, because many only take a few clients each month. I personally only accept two clients per month, because I want to be sure I’m available to be there for YOU.
If Birth Photography is something you truly want, I offer payment plans on this service. It’s an investment you will not regret when you look back on your photos and reminisce on the day your child was born.
