Many expecting parents wonder if they could benefit from having a Birth Doula. What is a Doula? How can they help? How do I choose the right Doula for my birth?
We’re going to go over some of the reasons why hiring a Doula for your birth can help you have a more positive and empowering birthing experience.
So, let’s get to it! Why should you hire a Birth Doula? Well to put it simply, they are going to make you feel confident, educated, and prepared to welcome your baby. That’s what we all want isn’t it? Childbirth has a stigma of being “hard”, “scary”, and “painful”, but it doesn’t need to be a negative experience. Understanding the process and being prepared for it will not only put your mind at ease, but your body as well. A Doula will provide physical comfort through techniques such as massage, acupressure, counter-pressure and assistance breathing. They will also provide you with emotional support, reassurance, encouragement and education. It is also our job to help facilitate communication between you and the medical staff involved in your labour & birth. Are you wanting to breastfeed? A Doula can help you initiate that bond with your baby as well!
Our most important role, however, is providing continuous support during your labour and delivery. Statistics show that having a Doula as support can be associated with:
- A decrease in negative birth experiences
- A decrease in need for medical pain relief during labour
- A decrease in the length of labour
- A decrease in the likelihood of a C-section
The first step in hiring a Birth Doula is the interviewing process. This can seem overwhelming but think of it as a job interview. You’re not the one applying for the job, the Doula is, so take a deep breath and follow your gut! Follow your intuition when making your decision. Some things to consider when interviewing Doulas:
- What is their philosophy on childbirth?
- What kind of experience do they have?
- Do you like the Doula’s personality?
- Do they agree or support your personal values?
- Do they seem educated and supportive?
- Do they work with a Back-up?
- How will they include your partner?
- What services do they offer?
- What are their rates?
The Doula you choose will become very close with you during your pregnancy and you’ll need to feel comfortable sharing your thoughts and feelings with them. Take your time, do some interviews, and choose the Doula that feels right to you. You’re always going to remember your birth experience, so let’s make it a positive and empowering one!
